Noyo Fish Company sits right on the water in Noyo Harbor, a few steps from the fishing boats that bring in its rock cod. There is no dining room to speak of – you order at the walk-up window, take a number to one of the picnic tables on the dock, and your fish and chips arrive a few minutes later. In the meantime there are sea lions hauled out on the floats, pelicans working the channel, and boats coming and going under the Highway 1 bridge.
The fish and chips are what most people come for: four pieces of wild-caught local rock cod in a light, crisp batter, with a pile of fries and a house-made tartar sauce. The clam chowder is thick with clams and potato and comes with a slab of toasted French bread, and it has won over more than one visiting New Englander. If you’d rather not have the fried fish, there are Baja-style fish tacos, a salmon taco with mango salsa, jumbo prawns, a shrimp po’ boy, and beer-battered fried pickles, plus chicken strips for the kids. A handful of local craft beers rotate on tap, and you can get a pitcher for the table.
Noyo Harbor is a working harbor, tucked into the mouth of the Noyo River below the bridge, and the tables here are as close to the water as you can get without being on a boat. Fishing boats tie up a few feet away, harbor seals and sea lions loaf on the docks, and if you’re lucky a river otter will wander by along the bank. The seating is all outdoors, some of it under covered tents and some at open-air tables with heat lamps, so a foggy afternoon is no reason to stay away.
Noyo Fish Company is located at 32440 North Harbor Drive, on the north side of the harbor, a short walk from Princess Seafood and Floyd and Connie’s. It is casual, family friendly, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am until about 7:30pm, a little later on Friday and Saturday; closed Monday and Tuesday.
