Visitors of the Mendocino Yarn Shop – expert knitters and curious beginners alike – all seem to agree that the tiny shop is home to something much greater than the contents of its shelves. This is not surprising, as fiber and its many uses have held a significant role as a medium of cultural expression and community-building for centuries, among countless civilizations. Somehow, the act of binding fibers with each other to create clothing, household items, decorations, and art pieces is (and has been) inherently meaningful to us as united peoples. What better place to get a feel for the heart and history of a community than in its yarn shop?
Mendocino, CA is a tiny treasure chest of some of the most exquisite and beautiful natural marvels of this country. The plethora of ocean views, rocky reefs, and wonderful creatures that can be found in Mendocino is mirrored in the large collection of colorful wool, cashmere, and cotton yarns that burst from the shelves in the Mendocino Yarn Shop.
As you walk into the shop, your body will immediately get to work processing a divine feast of sensory input. The wooden shelves lining the walls of the shop invite you to thoroughly investigate each cubby to uncover the treasures they contain. The soothing silence created by the abundance of sound-permeable skeins of yarn lining the walls and shelves of the shop will put your mind and heart at ease. Your body will know it is time to be mindful – it is time to focus on the ambiance and the materials before you. Such is the nature of the fiber arts.
The Mendocino Yarn Shop is open six days a week, and customers are pleased to find that the employees there are equally as excited about the yarn and its potential as they are. The shop even has a table set up for customers to bring in a project that has them stumped – an employee will gladly take a look and offer an opinion as to how you can move forward.
In addition to the colorful selection of fine yarns, the shop sells almost any knitting and crocheting instruments you might need. Pick out a new book, or peruse the sample projects they have on display for some inspiration. If you’re not interested in personally diving into the craft, you can also simply buy something hand-made by an employee or patron of the shop.
